Do You Actually Have a Retirement Plan…or Just a Retirement Projection?

A retirement projection shows you what could happen if everything goes according to plan. A retirement plan helps prepare you for what happens when it doesn’t.

One of the most common misconceptions I see is this:

Many people believe they have a retirement plan…

…when in reality, they simply have a retirement projection.

There’s an important difference.

A projection often assumes life moves in a straight line.

  • Your investments earn a consistent return.
  • The markets cooperate and you don’t lose any money.
  • Inflation remains predictable.
  • You retire on schedule.
  • Life unfolds exactly as expected, including how long you’ll live

Unfortunately, retirement rarely works that way.

Real retirement planning isn’t about assuming everything goes according to plan.  It’s about preparing for the moments when it doesn’t.

A true retirement strategy asks questions like:

  • What happens if I retire during a difficult market?
  • How long can my income realistically last?
  • Which accounts should I withdraw from first?
  • How might taxes affect my retirement over time?
  • What adjustments can I make if circumstances change?

These aren’t questions most retirement calculators can answer.

They’re the kinds of conversations that help transform uncertainty into confidence.

Over my 20+ years of helping clients plan for retirement throughout Greater Milwaukee, Waukesha County, Lake Country, and communities across Wisconsin, I’ve found that many people don’t necessarily need better investments. They simply need a better understanding of how all the moving pieces of retirement work together because retirement isn’t built on straight-line assumptions.  It’s built on thoughtful planning, flexibility, and preparing for life’s uncertainties.

So, if life doesn’t unfold exactly the way you expect, how confident are you that your retirement plan can adapt?
