Retirement Isn’t About Getting There…It’s About Staying There

Saving enough to retire is only part of the equation. The real challenge is creating a plan designed to support you throughout retirement.

Several years ago, something changed the way I thought about retirement planning.

Like many advisors early in my career, I believed my job was to help people simply accumulate enough money to retire comfortably.  It was the same old script:

  1. Work hard.
  2. Save consistently.
  3. Invest wisely.
  4. Reach retirement.
  5. Mission accomplished.

Or so I thought.

Then I began sitting across the table from people who had actually retired—from clients around the Greater Milwaukee area to Dousman and throughout Lake Country.

Many had done almost everything right. They had worked for decades, saved diligently, paid off their homes, and accumulated meaningful retirement savings.

Yet despite all of that…

  • Many still weren’t enjoying retirement.
  • They hesitated to spend money.
  • They questioned every vacation.
  • They worried about unexpected expenses.

Some even delayed dreams they had looked forward to for years because they weren’t sure if they could afford to enjoy them.

That’s when I realized something important:

Retirement isn’t simply about getting there. It’s about staying there—with confidence and the peace of mind that you won’t go broke while in retirement.

Retirement asks a completely different set of questions than your working years.

Instead of asking, “How much can I save?” the questions become:

  • How much can I safely spend?
  • How can I maximize my retirement paycheck?
  • What happens if markets decline?
  • What if I want to leave a legacy to my family—can I even do that?

Those answers don’t come from an investment statement, and the answers aren’t always a binary yes or no.

They come from having a coordinated retirement strategy.

Ask yourself this question:

“If you retired tomorrow, would you feel confident—or simply hopeful—that your retirement plan would support the life you envision?”

If that question gives you pause, you’re certainly not alone.
