The Retirement Risk Nobody Talks About

A successful retirement isn’t only about making your money last. It’s also having the confidence to enjoy the life you worked so hard to build.

When people think about retirement risks, the usual concerns come to mind:

  1. Running out of money
  2. Market downturns
  3. Inflation
  4. Future healthcare costs
  5. Taxes

Those are all important.

But after working with retirees throughout Milwaukee, Brookfield, Pewaukee, and communities across Southeast Wisconsin, I’ve come to believe there’s another risk that doesn’t receive nearly enough attention: We call it the Risk of Regret.

In other words, sometimes the challenge isn’t getting people to spend less. It’s helping them feel comfortable enough to enjoy more of what they’ve worked so hard to build.

I’ve sat with retirees who spent decades working hard, making sacrifices, and saving consistently.

They reached retirement with enough resources to enjoy life.

Yet they were still afraid.

  • Afraid to travel.
  • Afraid to spend money on experiences they’d dreamed about for years.
  • Afraid they’d run out.

Sometimes I’ve found myself saying something I never expected when I first entered this profession:

“It’s okay to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build.”

That isn’t permission to spend recklessly.

It’s a reminder that retirement planning isn’t only about preserving wealth.  It’s also about helping your money support the life you want to live.

When retirement planning is done correctly, the goal isn’t simply to have confidence that you won’t run out of money.

It’s also having a plan that can adjust along the way and help you understand when you may actually be able to spend more. Yes, you heard that right: spend and enjoy a bit more.

Because there is another side to retirement planning that we don’t talk about enough: reaching the end of your life with considerably more money than you ever needed, only to look back and regret some of the things you could have done—but didn’t.

After decades of preparing for retirement, you deserve the confidence to enjoy it.

If you look back twenty years from now…

What might you regret more?

Being so cautious because you were afraid of running out of money…

Or realizing you never allowed yourself to fully enjoy the retirement you worked so hard to achieve?
